The centrifuge is loaded with slurry from the top through the centrifuge feedpipe while the centrifuge is rotating. The solids are retained on the centrifuge basket wall and the liquids pass through the solids and out into the centrifuge housing where it is drained away. Following the feeding of the slurry the retained product is termed "cake" this cake can now be washed if desired by passing a wash solvent through the feedpipe. Following washing the bowl will slow down to discharge speed at which point the centrifuge peeler knife is rotated from its central position and removes the “cake” from the basket wall and then gravity allows the product to drop down through the discharge chute.
